High School Reform Initiatives

NGA Honor States Grant

Honor Schools logoVirginia was one of ten states selected by the National Governors Association to help in its effort to Redesign the American High School. Participating states received grants to implement redesign initiatives to improve high school graduation rates and college readiness.

Visit the NGA Honor States site.

Commonwealth Scholars logoCommonwealth Scholars

Eighteen Virginia school divisions are participating in a pilot program that encourages students to take rigorous courses that go beyond the minimum graduation requirements for a Standard Diploma. Students who complete a suggested course of more rigorous study will be recognized as Commonwealth Scholars.

The pilot is under the direction of the Virginia Career Education Foundation.  For more information on this initiative, please visit their Web site.
