Career and Technical Education

  • Virginia’s NGA STEM Center Grant
  • Virginia received a grant from the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The purpose of the grant is to develop model programs in career and technical education (CTE) that will expand options for the general population of students to acquire STEM literacy and other critical knowledge, skills and credentials to prepare them for high-demand, high-skill and high-wage careeers in Virginia. These programs are partnerships of business and industry, public schools, community colleges and universities, and local government including regional workforce and economic development officials. The grant provides for the development of Governor’s Career and Technical Academies and the Governor’s Exemplary Standard Award Program for Career and Technical Education.
  • New Technical Diplomas
  • The 2007 legislative session directed the State Board of Education to develop a new high school diploma in technical education for students who meet or exceed the requirements for a standard diploma and complete a concentration in career and technical education. The legislation also provides for an advanced technical diploma if students meet the requirements of an advanced studies diploma and complete a career and technical education concentration (HB 2039 and SB 1147).
